A simple week block would accomplish a lot of things:
We wouldn't have long administrative discussions about civility and the length of blocks. A week block takes the drama out of it.
It's said that a sense of "community" is valued on this site, yet it seems to me that monster blocks of several weeks or months are more destructive than constructive. We have the usual blow-ups, blocks, administrative post-mortems, followed by more blocks, until the cycle repeats itself. How can you build a community on shifting sand?
But the main reason I'm against long blocks - anything over a week - is that everything should be forgiven and the slate wiped clean. If that means an offender gets blocked several times a year, so be it, but he or she will always have the chance to rejoin the community with a fresh start.
I'm back to wondering whether this site is a kind of group experiment to see how we react to civility rules and punishment, and not really a site about community and support, afterall.
I'm really on a break right now. I have an evening planned of experiments of my own - what will 5 grams of ground albizza flowers do?
