This is in response to some of the posts lately criticising the deputies here for their actions. While I realize that it can be upsetting so see someone we like on here being sanctioned for breaking a rule, I think it's important to keep in mind that the deputies here are acting according to guidelines created by the site's owner, Dr Bob. The Deputies do not make up the rules, they only enforce them.
I know a lot of people disagree with the rules Dr Bob has codified here -- and there are some I disagree with myself. (Of course, I find I'm most likely to disagree with a rule when I want to break it, but c'est la vie, eh?) The civility guidelines are constantly evolving, and it's great if you feel strongly enough to come here and protest the rule -- but do you have to protest the person, too?
In the case of the most recent brouhaha, I agree that Matt was provoked -- BUT he was also well beyond the threshold of civility in what he wrote. Matt has been blocked in the past, and so he was eligible for a non-PBC blocking. While I agree that it's unfortunate that it happened, I can't agree that he should have been given a free pass.
And as for Willyee's question about why any specific deputy hasn't been blocked, I think that might be related to behavior, and not identity. I would bet that, uncomfortable as it might be, if a deputy crossed the line, another deputy would step in with a PBC or even a block. So far, the deputies have chosen not to behave in such a way as to earn a block.
So how about a couple of verses of Kumbaya...
