"Neether" or "nyther" ?

That reminds me. . . years ago, the flutist, James Galway was a guest on the Johnny Carson show. Johnny Carson asked Galway, "Tell me, is it pronounced "flutist" or "flautist"? Galway replied: "Eether" or "Eyther."
