Given that every few months or so, there seems be posts that arrive about the function and mission of this site, I wanted to put in my 1/5 of a dime.
I think the fact of whether such sites are helpful, harmful, or neutral is up for debate. There is a gap between ethics and new technology and this is no more evident than in this "new" mode of communication. The fact of whether such sites are good for support or are actually enabling problems or worsening such problems is probably as individual as the posters themselves and the issues that are being struggled with and again, debateable.
All that being said, there are some factors to take into account regarding this site:
1) This is a public internet site, we are made aware of this fact, it can be seen or used by anyone with internet access.
2) There is a form of informed consent that includes the standards expected by posters and the practices expected to be followed. This point has been brought up for questions and probably always will.
AND---- the BIGGIE
3) This is VOLUNTARY. One chooses to read, participate, be here or not be here..
For all the difficulties that arise on support sites, I don't believe that if we really consider what we are buying into and the risks we are taking that we are being that heavily deceived or misinformed.
Making choices that are workable from individual to individual is key.
