Question about posting names - Dr. Bob

Posted by Dinah on March 15, 2002, at 8:48:09

I assume that sue doe, Sue Doe, Sue Doe Nym, and SUE DOE are the same poster. Is there a way to have your posting name appear differently on the board? That would be kind of neat.

On the other hand if those are all separate posting names, I am somewhat appalled at the potential for mischief a la the Di. Bob type, only worse since it would be someone impersonating other posters. Could someone register as DINAH or dinah and pretend to be me? The potential for havoc is huge, particularly if someone is a former poster or someone who checks the board infrequently. A lot of damage could be done by the time the impostature is discovered.

If the latter scenario is the case, I think you really ought to do something about your posting name technology. I mean just imagine someone posting as Cam w and giving advice that is given the weight that Cam's advice is given. I shudder at the thought.

This is no way a complaint about Sue Doe, just a question about posting names that I think everyone should be aware of and know the answer to. In fact I thank Sue for making me think of it. Or more clearly think of it. I admit to once or twice checking the capitalization or spelling of a poster's name if the post seemed out of character for them.

Thanks,
Dinah
