two cents worth (and a bit too long)

Just some thoughts ~

If someone is internet savvy and vigilant about security, s/he'll read the FAQ. I think it would be quite helpful if the privacy section and the copyright section were bumped up next to each other. I don't know about others, but I associate the two.

However, if someone is in a lot of pain, searching the internet for information and support, and if s/he isn't as aware of privacy issues, there's a greater likelihood that s/he might post...and then regret.

Part of it depends on how we are introduced to the site - whether we find a specific message through a search engine (as I did), or enter from the home page. (1)The links beside the submit button are awfully tiny. (2)The home page could use a link to the FAQ as well. (3)I don't think a brief statement about whose property posts become, in *bold* and in strategic positions, would be too difficult to add, but I'm not maintaining these pages and could be way off base.

I think this board is terrific, both because of the fine people who post and the way Dr. Bob moderates the boards. While I don't know much about Dr. Hsiung, my general impression is that he's pretty thoughtful and sympathetic, for a psychiatrist :)

My attitude about the article is that it all depends on how he writes about his subject(s), the tone he takes. If he writes about people like us who are dealing with serious mental health issues as if we're "guinea pigs", depriving us of our dignity, I'll be upset, and will simply leave. If he writes about us respectfully and sympathetically, as the human beings we are, I'll be fine about continuing on this board. I'm inclined at this point to think that I'll find the latter when I finally read that darned article :)

I think the use of posts is a major issue for all of us in communities such as this, both for those of us who post and the doctors and therapists who provide a framework and moderation. I read PB and PSB for a week or two before posting and clearly understood that Dr. Hsiung could use my posts - but I never would have expected that screen names might be used. I have made some (I hope) relatively minor gaffes, but I'm trying to learn the style here. I've been on the 'net for nearly a decade. I've been burned a few times, and I keep trying to remember, "Think Before You Post."

I hope that a lot of good will come out of this. Sorry this has become so long, but because of past experiences, I think I understand a bit how upset Anna has been, and I've been brooding about this a lot.

Best to all,

mary

p.s. I had three generations of guinea pigs when I was a kid. I loved them dearly.
