Hi there,
I got my results from the 23ANDME test. I took the results to Prometheus and have spend a few days reading things over. For the most part, there were no 'glaring' issues but some interesting findings that I need to look further into.
1) I have the 'bad' version of the methfolate gene that 5-10% of the population possesses. I found this interesting as folic acid, methyfolate and SAMe have always had a degree of efficacy for me.
2) I may have a partial biotindase deficiancy. This apparently reduces the levels of biotin. I have never supplemented with biotin (in isolation) but may consider doing this, with further research
3) The SNPs tested for CACNA1 were normal, but I possess some 'rare' variants of the ANK3 genes. ANK3 genes are among the stronger associated genes for bipolar. I didn't have all the 'bad' genes, but (out of the 7 SNPs tested) I had 3 of the rare variants (where only 2-5% of the population possesses). I would like to get my mother and father tested to see if I got the 'bad' ones from my mother.
4) I didn't get a conclusive result on the serotonin transporter gene, but it's somewhat likely I have a L-S variant.
5) I didn't get any meaningful results on the MAO-A or COMT related genes.
6) My PER2 and PER3 genes were normal. I have had ongoing sleep issues so was hoping something would show up here, but it didn't.
7) I had one bad SNP in the DISC1 gene (linked to bipolar / schizophrenia), but other SNPs here were fine.
8) I got no meaningful information on TRKB, but the small number of BDNF SNPs looked fine.
9) In the 50 SNPs analyzed for bipolar, I had some uncommon ones show up. In other words, I had more 'bipolar' genes come up than would be expected by chance.
10) Unfortunately, 23ANDME didn't analyze many of the 'unipolar' SNPS (only 9) so I couldn't get much info is here.
So, all in all, I'm still reading on this. I didn't get any major breakthrough results BUT I did get some nuggets worth looking into (namely a possible need to supplement with methylfolate, biotin and that I seem to have some degree of bipolar genetic load).Linkadge
