just...jumping in here...
i couldn't deal with seroquel. back when i briefly tried it, there wasn't an xr on the market. so...2x daily dosing, very sedating, and...no. no, no, no. i remember once, the dosage had maybe gotten up to 100mgs, I just started crying, so miserable.
but its kind of...6 of 1, 1/2 dozen the other, with the 'atypical' neuroleptics, i think. on abilify, i don't have that -sort- of drug-induced misery, but it hasn't been without mind-numbing, mood-dampening effects, either.
i think the scary thing about abilify is that the drug-induced depression can kind of sneak up on you, and it does so without heavy sedation or any obvious EPS (for me, at least).
zyprexa was a no go for me, because i somehow developed akathisia off a low starting dose, but it does seem effective for lots and lots of people. there's a new zyprexa plus something combo pill coming out...i think the idea is that the 2nd 'magical ingredient' reduces metabolic risks, i think its supposed to boost results in psych state, also, maybe?
i dunno. i think the sedation from seroquel is part of what drives its ongoing popularity among prescribers. i kind of wonder, though...for those of us with more schizophrenia-spectrum and/or more severe end of mood - spectrum disorders, if its that great of a drug option. my current prescriber briefly brought up a switch to seroquel, but said i'd need 600-800mgs/daily for 'symptom control,' and I'm thinking...
seriously?!?! 'symptom control' or 'patient control' ? i stuck with the abilify.
