In reply to What's Trazodone, why I've never heard of it....., posted by Mtom on September 26, 2016, at 7:38:52
Hello.
I only have a partial answer for you but I do have experience with Trazadone. I, too, was prescribed it as a sleep aid.
> Very summarized history (long as this post this). Mid-aged female, started experiencing depression suddenly years ago. Last 3 years worse. Can't take antidepressants or supplements with similar properties eg 5HTP - agitation/anxiety (sometimes severe), mood swings, brain-fog, even serotonergic reactions. Scarier than the depression. Tests years ago showed Stage 1 Liver P450 enzyme system not functioning correctly, may be reason for intolerance.
I don't respond well to standard a/d's either. SSRI's in particular cause me to feel very anxious with no benefit.

Been reading it is an atypical antidepressant. Should I risk it? What are typical and rarer side effects? Don't want to feel worse. Why have I never heard it mentioned by Doctor or others I've discussed anti-depressants with?I found Trazadone to be very effective for sleep. However, I always felt like I had a hangover the next morning. I had to ditch it. As far as its popularity as an a/d, I hear its not often used for that purpose as its not very effective. That may be why you haven't heard of it.
Good luck!
