Here's a National Institutes of Health page discussing the subject. I suspect that they created the post because there were so many unsubstantiated internet posts exaggerating liver toxicity concerns with respect to the drug.
http://livertox.nih.gov/ModafinilArmodafinil.htmI did an extensive search on PubMed. Modafanil (which adrafinil metabolizes into) is used in the treatment for some symptoms caused by serious liver disorders. They'd certainly not be using it if it caused further liver damage.
It is true that 1% of the population show slight elevation in liver enzymes after taking it. I bet you that the population percentage with elevated liver enzymes is higher after Tylenol intake.
If you're still concerned, after reading the NIH web-page which includes this statement, "despite widescale use, there have not been reports of clinically apparent liver injury due to modafinil or armodafinil", you might ask your doctor if your liver enzymes are normal or not.
I really think this is a case of internet myth building.
