It appears that another major double-blind clinical trial of DBS for depression has failed. St. Jude Medical terminated their BROADEN study of DBS targeting the subgenual cingulate, after the FDA informed the company that it would fail the required futility analysis. The difference between the treatment group and the sham group was insufficient to establish efficacy.
Some patients did benefit, many did not, and some were left with terrible adverse effects and impairments.
