Hi bleauberry!
I certainly agree that a lot of these symptoms associated with "mental illness" could be caused by any number of things, but the problem to me is that there isn't enough solid information to point us in the right direction as far as how do we figure out what "toxins" are making us ill, and how do we get rid of these toxins?
The word "detox" itself is such a buzzword but what does that really mean? How do we "detox"? What are the "toxins"? It's all so vague to me.
I've read Dr. Hyman's "Ultramind solution" where he talks about how to fix your "broken brain" and while I did find some things about it informative, most of it was this same sort of generic discussion of the "toxins" and how they're making us all sick.
Where can I find more specific information? Again, it's all too vague for me to latch onto right now.
It's also hard to take Dr. Hyman too seriously when he basically tells you to take hundreds of dollars of supplements a month, from his own company! How is that any better than big pharma?
I think the best approach is an "integrative" approach. I still take psych meds, but I'm on low doses now, and combine them with supplements that have some science behind them, like omega-3, vitamin d, and methylfolate.
I certainly agree with your point about sugar. I just recently watched a documentary called "Fed Up' have you seen it?
