Back when I was tapering lorazepam (because of tolerance and inter-dose withdrawal), I'd reached the point after two months where I didn't see how I could taper any more. Because of its short half-life, the withdrawal symptoms were awful each time I cut the dose. I'd only be able to sleep two hours a night, and I'd pace back and forth most of the day. I'd been trying for weeks to get a prescription for Valium, but no doctor would give it to me. Finally, thank God, I got some Valium and did a crossover to it. It took me another two months to finish my benzo taper, and it was far from pleasant, but it wasn't nearly as bad as it had been on lorazepam.
