My psych reviewed the research I did and prescribed 100mg modafinil. However, neither Provigil nor Nuvigil are in the formulary. Without insurance the month will cost well over $500, so I bought some adrafinil from France on impulse.
But my psych left me a message asking to talk about alternatives that might be in the formulary.
I'm generally averse to taking amphetamine stimulants, but I need something with pharmaceutical power for 1) energy, 2) motivation, and 3) offset that icky Nardil 15 lbs.
What options might I have? My psychiatrist would not appeal my insurance company's denial on the grounds that I don't have an explicit narcoleptic/shift/sleep disorder and that she would not be able to prove that the prescription was medically necessary.
Are there other stimulant drugs -- preferably FDA approved for conditions or side effects surrounding major depressive disorder -- that can help? I'll try the adrafinil since it is legal, but it's an ethical leap I made with my psychiatrist that I am not comfortable with despite their general equivalence.
