There are stadies showing that none of the antidepressants work better than placebo, even the "gold standard" ones like imipramine, amitriptyline, tranylcypromine and phenelzine.
Clinical experience disputres this - and genenral, the more severe your depression, the better an antidepressant will work.
I think the SSRI's find their forte in mild "mixed anxiety depression syndrome", the same cluster of symptoms that made tranquilisers the bst selling drugs for 2 generations, rather than in severe endrogenous depression, where other drugs are better.
