In the 50s-60s, when "antipsychotics" were known as either "neuroleptics" or "tranquilizers," kids were given Thorazine and God knows what else to treat hyperkinetic disorders. Not surprisingly, a lot of those kids developed TD, NMS is apparently more of an issue for younger people, and there's obviously the issue of giving heavy meds to a developing person.
I imagine that once the TD lawsuits hit and the anti-psychiatry movement made psychiatry a little more common sense for a while, that practice started to die down, at least for kids who weren't in some sort instituton (neuroleptics are the go-to med for people who are warehoused).
Now, with "childhood onset bipolar" and this freaky approach to ADD/ADHD, it seems like the bad old days are back, only now the pills are more expensive, they're plugged on TV, they cause more metabolic side effects, and there's more of a "cocktail" mentality to prescribing, so the I would imagine its even worse. I mean, Thorazine is bad enough, but Abilify+Stimulants+clonidine might put a couple hundred mgs of Thorazine to shame in terms of side effects. Sad times.
