Treatment for damage to the Insula?

Posted by TriedEveryMedication on February 28, 2012, at 22:48:15

According to an MRI, I have some sort of ischemic damage to my Insula. The source of the damage is unknown, perhaps a fetal stroke, or something.

Supposedly, this part of the brain is involved in social functions, mood regulation, attention regulation, cognition and other things.

I have deficits in all these areas, some somewhat weird surprising to my shrink. For instance, for some memory tests, I scored very low, but for others, I scored perfect or almost perfect - very high percentiles.

Anyway, my shrink says SSRIs are typically given for damage in this area. I have not done to well on SSRIs, though.

Are there any other possibilities that I could bring up to my doctor when I see him next? I see this part of the brain is receptive to some psychedelics, but that is probably way out of the question. Anything legal that affects the same receptors?

Thank you.
