Just my opinion but I happen to disagree with this article. They did get one part right, as I see it, pertaining to PTSD being a result of HPA axis dysregulation. But that calls for other means different than psychiatric drugs to manipulate that complicated axis. Many of the psychiatric drugs can actually make it worse. They claim ssri's are the only effective drugs, but what they fail to say is the reason they are effective is because they basically numb the ability to feel emotions.
If the HPA axis is assumed to be dysregulated, then confiirm with a a few common hormonal tests. Then treat it with appropriate substances to attempt rebalance. There are some herbs that do exactly that but I am not aware of any meds that do, except maybe as an unexpected accident of trial and error.
In this article they added risperidone to ssri, it didn't work, and thus they formed a blanket judgement over all antipsychotics. They should have tried abilify, zyprexa, and amisulpride. My guess is one of those would indeed work to improve PTSD if only looking at pharmaceutical strategies.
