SSRIs are similar in basic function, but are not the same.
The claim that if someone fails one then they will fail them all is completely false. There are literally hundreds of clinical studies that show that, and thousands upon thousands of anecdotal cases.
Zoloft is much different than Lexapro. Prozac is much different than all of them. The deeper we look into them, the more differences we find. Some are actually opposites of the others. The only common link is they block serotonin reuptake pumps one way or another. That is only a fraction of the other stuff they do. Not to mention how they each uniquely turn certain genes up or down.
All that said, in defense of SSRIs from an objective viewpoint, my subjective view is that I am not a big fan of any of them in monotherapy. Impacting primarily serotonin without any regard for the others is bad business in my opinion.
