pristiq is a metabolite of effexor, the body would convert part of effexor to pristiq, but this depends on individual differences in effexor metabolism. Also, the parent drug (venlafaxine) has different properties than pristiq (desvenlafaxine)

Its like amitriptyline is converted to nortriptyline in the body, but nortriptyline has different properties than amitriptyline.

Taking amitriptyline will give you the effect of two drugs (amitriptyline plus nortriptyline as it is metabolised), but just taking nortriptyline you only get one drug.
