I think part of the problem is that the research (just from what I've seen, as a non-expert) seems to be focused primarily on those with more severe disorders. For instance, there are pretty good treatment recommendations for patients with various forms of Bipolar I, Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, and Psychotic Depression. When you start looking at less severe disorders, however, there doesn't seem to be as much good research and so there's not as much for professionals and patients to go on.
