Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy to me is kind of the gold standard of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It was one of the first books written on the subject for the patient to use directly.
If you haven't had exposure or much success with CBT before it would probably be worth a read. Just know that it is not a instant cure, but a more like a treatment plan.
Also note that I am not at all against medication. I currently take Lexapro 20 mg, and a vitamin/prescription called deplin. But I still flip through my dog earred copy of Feeling Good whenever my anxiety starts to creep up.
