In reply to Clonazepam and lexapro combo: more depression?, posted by vic80 on March 13, 2010, at 6:35:01
I have the same question about Klonopin (and any other benzo for that matter) regarding depression. I took Lexapro for about 3 years, and for three years, it worked wonders for my depression. However, I'm also prescribed Xanax for anxiety; and when I needed to take a Xanax to deal with an anxiety attack, I did notice that shortly after taking Xanax, I did feel depressed.
Unlike you, with Lexapro, I had the opposite of insomnia - Lexapro made me so sleepy I could barely tolerate it until I got used to it. Then when you put Xanax in the picture, I was a zombie (which was fine with me at the time due to my depression).
Now I take Effexor XR 150 mgs once per day, and am on 1 mg of Klonopin three times per daay. I do notice that after I take Klonopin, I feel more depressed than I had before I took it. I get weepy and sad and melancholy, BUT, the anxiety is gone, so I'm trying to weigh the benefits vs. the adverse effects.
To answer your question as best I can, I do believe, based on my own personal experience, that benzos DO tend to cause a more depressed state.
Having said that, this has been my own personal experience, and I can't say that this is the case for everybody. Fortunately, there are a lot of knowlegable people here who can guide you further.
good luck!
