Dear Markwell,
Many on this board feel this way and I don't have all the answers but just learn more science and psychopharmacology as it comes out. I don't push any religion as I'm spiritual, but I've been studying near death experiences for over twenty years and what they tell us about our life on Earth (true meaning) and in the Afterlife and why certain people may suffer.
You might find Sandra Rogers near death experience comforting in a summary of her book "Lessons from the Light" (http://www.near-death.com/experiences/suicide03.html) as well as the individual, Kevin R. Williams, who put the www.near-death.com website together as he suffers from bipolar disorder and has tried to piece together mental illness and what near death experiences tell us about life.
Personally after having 75 ECTs at the age of 18 without any positive effect and trying well over 50 some odd meds (I'm 42y/o now), I beleive the MAOIS are superior in my personal opinion.
Best wishes..
