Paxil-induced tremor. Switch SSRI vs. B-blocker?

Posted by mattdds on May 10, 2009, at 1:49:13

Hi all,

I had fairly noticeable response to Paxil in terms of anxiety, depression. It also greatly decreased my hypersensitivity to criticism and feedback. However, I did develop a physiologic tremor which was a side effect that was unacceptable for my career path. I asked for a low dose of propranolol or something to address this, but was denied for concerns that it would worsen my depression.

I decided to discontinue it with complete resolution of the tremor, but I sorta miss the calming effect of Paxil.

Are some members of the SSRI family more notorious than others for this effect, or is it pretty much a class effect?

Does anyone have any experiences with beta-blockers or other meds that address SSRI-induced tremor?

What's the mechanism behind this? Decreased dopaminergic tone comes to mind with the SSRI's...

Thanks,

Matt
