Combining TCAs - good or bad idea?

Posted by HyperFocus on April 23, 2009, at 0:12:05

I get a partial, rapid and very noticeable response to 150mg amitriptyline - it's hard to describe but the social anxiety gets turned way down and I feel I have much more control over my thoughts and emotions. The problem is I can't tolerate this min. therapeutic dose during the day - i simple CANNOT stay awake with it. So I've decided to shift somewhat laterally and try imipramine. I switched directly to 150mg of imipramine - haven't really noticed anything positive or negative except that it doesn't make me sleepy. I'm willing to try it for a few weeks but the problem is I CANNOT fall asleep without some dose of amitrip - no benzos or sleeping meds can shut down my mind enough for me to sleep. So I'm gonna take my 150mg imipramine in the day and 150mg amitriptyline at night. What do you guys think? I only found one thread started by SLS in the archives and absolutely zilch on the rest of the web on the topic of combining TCAs. I do seem to remember one poster - was it d/r? - saying that it was a bad idea to combine them.
