50mg of amitriptyline (Elavil) is a medium psychoactive dose for depression and is WAY beyond the 10mg recommended for sleep, which I was on for some time, unless you are already taking it for depression.


Trazodone is generally dosed 50-150mg at night. It has the potential just as Elavil of becoming used to its sedation although Elavil is much longer lasting than doxepin.

Creeping dosage is possible, where one may find 100 and then 150mg is necessary, and then have to back off and restart again, at least from my own experience

Dosages higher are in the adult antidepressant range and are not part of off-label sleep use.
