I almost read that as 'happy meds'. :)

Hops -- well, hey they are distantly related to marijuana, so who knows whether they add more than just flavour to beer.

Niacin -- either I took an esoteric version that wasn't right (it was supposedly non-flushing), or I had a reaction to it -- it definitely wasn't anxiolytic, it made me very nervous and flushing occurred anyhow.

Now Kava extracts, there's a different thing -- sparingly using liquid gels that have specific kavalactone amounts listed -- well it can be quite heavenly for those who suffer from back spasms and stiffness and basically it acts on GABA-a as well as probably unknown things.

It is known to cause drowsiness, it can rarely also cause psychosis, it supposedly can be hard on the liver although the full extent of that is not completely known.

I find if I use it very rarely so I dont get 'used' to it (even though it has claims otherwise -- although ceremonial use consistently can lead to kavism, yellow skin problems, etc)

... it actually makes me, well happy, high, yes, probably, but what of it for a moment from depression.
