Anybody take an SSRI through childhood? Quit?

Posted by FinishBen on January 12, 2009, at 21:26:54

Hello all! I am new to this site and am just incredibly impressed with what is happening here.

I am a 24 year-old male who was diagnosed with OCD at about 8, and took SSRIs from about age 10 to age 22. Then I decided to stop. It has been almost two years since I ceased, and things have yet to return to "Normal". The truth is, things were quite apart from normal for the last few years I was on the drugs, with frequent adjustment and dose increases unable to stem developing depression. Actually - I got depressed for the first time while on SSRIs.

In any case, I am looking for others out there who took SSRIs through part or all of their childhoods. I realize this may be a relatively small subgroup. That said, I know that where I was treated - large hospital in Boston - the wisdom was that children could (and even maybe should) take meds for OCD and continue through adulthood.

One of the most disconcerting aspects of this is the seeming complete lack of any evidence on the long-term effects of pediatric usage.......
