Certain traumatic experiences can cause profound changes in mood and brain chemistry. Whether or not they are long lasting is uncertain.

My friend was suicidal for 3 years. He got into a car accident and was in critical condition for a while, during which he was not on meds. He said after he got better he felt the most normal he had in years. No meds, no depression etc.

Its hard to say, but its worth a try. Sometimes less meds = better mood.

Don't be afriad to feel ok off meds. It doesn't undermine your previous suffering in any way.
(I have sometimes felt this way - like if I was to go off meds and feel ok that somehow it all didn't exist, or that it wasn't real etc. Not true)

You can always go back on them.
