The primary effect of caffeine, at doses typically used, is the blockade of adenosine-receptors. It has no direct adrenergic effects, but some reports suggest that it does raise (nor)adrenaline levels or turnover. Since it can enhance arousal and sometimes cause anxiety, the increases in catecholamines seem logical.
