In reply to Nardil hypotension - how to treat ?, posted by 4WD on April 3, 2008, at 20:46:19
> Yesterday I had a scary experience. About noon I started to feel weak and light headed. I went on about my business but it got worse. At about 3 I was in Walmart and thought I was going to faint. I kept having to bend over and put my head down. I used the machine they have there and my blood pressure was 85/56. When I finally made it home I started eating salt and sipping water. After a couple of hours I was okay again but it did scare me.

>Standing, walking, and other exercise for a prolonged time can trigger the hypotensive attacks, so take breaks and sit down occasionally if possible. Obviously, avoid dehydration too.
As for pharmacological treatments, I've seen one suggestion of metoclopramide. The contraindicated stimulants and sympathomimetics - amphetamine, phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine, etc. - should be useful, with caution.
