Anafranil and amitryptaline are considered the gold standard for antidepressants.
Imipramine is often used as a reference, but amitryptaline usually outperforms imipramime back to back.
Clomipramine is considered by many one of the best antidepressants. It was probably the only drug that got me well enough to discontinue.
It is compared to SSRI's, but it got to the core of my bad mood much better.
Side effects are similar to SSRI's, but I found them much more tollerable on account of it working better.
TCA's get a bad rap on account of the push to prescribe newer drugs, but many studies actually find the older drugs more effective for certain types of depression.
SLS, if you remember him, has tried many of the newer drugs, but still finds relief with nortryptaline.
Nardil is also a drug to try should others fail.
