Insomnia alternating with hypersomnia

Posted by halcyondaze on April 28, 2007, at 18:11:52

I have the strangest problem. I cannot sleep without sleeping medication (literally - I will stay up for days without it; I've had chronic insomnia since childhood and have been taking medication for it for nine years) but lately I've also been experiencing hypersomnia when I do sleep. My body feels like lead, I cannot wake up for sixteen hours, I am fatigued and exhausted.

This has happened on Ambien, Halcion, and (now) Ativan and I don't understand it, as I've been on these drugs or variants of these drugs for a year and a half and usually my problem was that they didn't help me to sleep enough!

The only difference is that I am now on high dose Parnate (120 mg/day). Could this be the reason for the paradoxical hypersomnia?

Anyone have any suggestions? It's becoming quite life-interfering.

I am considering the possibility that I am depressed and/or there is some kind of physical illness but I can't imagine what it would be.

Thanks.
