Yes, Phillipa it *really* sucked for so long, and it still doesn't seemed to have changed that much. I mean, even in our jobs, who is 100 percent comfortable with coming out and saying 'I suffer from Bipolar/Major Depression/Major Anxiety.." etc? Even amongst so-called friends! And even family members. It still feels like the 19th century. What also MAJORLY bugs me is the 'cookie cutter' fashion of prescribing meds. I still come across many folks through the internet or such, who have been given, for the first time ever, full doses (i.e. 20 mg Celexa; or 20 mg Paxil..etc.) of an antidepressant, usually the newer class. And the person ends up suffering all of the usual start-up side effects over the first 3-5 weeks, then typically goes on hating the medication, stops it, and refuses to ever take a psych med again in their life. (They think it is for 'weak' people.)Personally, I think it should be mandatory for all antidepressants to be prescribed with a good 'mood stabilizing' drug like a benzo. I would have NEVER survived staying on an antidepressant if it weren't for the benzos. Maybe a small dose of one of the typically labelled mood stabilizers could also help. (i.e. neurontin, topomax, etc.) Anyhow...thanks for listening to my rant...:-)
