Charlie writes, in an old post (11/01/04), that he has been using Cipralex/escitalopram, 10mg per day, for almost a year with no previous treatment to compare results against. He goes on to say "After two weeks I lost my fear of absolutely everything, which scared me a bit. No fear of heights, no nothing, I felt superiour. I thought I was about to develop mania, but it was probably just a psychological side effect :-)"
My experience with Cipralex was that it contributed to a dysphoric mania at the 12 week marker. This included extreme agitation, racing thoughts and auditory hallucinations. It has since been determined that I am bipolar and being so, use of anti-depressant medication can cause this state.
I would like to urge Charlie and anyone else experiencing what I perceive as a description of a hypomanic state while on anti-depressants to immediately consult their doctor. Charlie's reaction could be the result of treatment given intended for a unipolar depression when in fact, a bipolar depression exists.
Thank you and best wishes, Day Tripper
