Effexor may be the problem. One of the emergent adverse effects is blood sugar changes. (Don't ask for cites -- I read that about the time I went off it, back in 2002.) I know that my blood sugar was in the 200 range by the time I got off it, partly no doubt because of the weight gain, but it normalized as soon as I got off the drug, even before the weight loss.
