Lunesta would be a good option. It induces quick sleep and keeps you asleep and then wears off quickly after waking. A side effect of a bad taste in the mouth or sinuses usually goes away in a few days. It doesn't seem to poop out so much like ambien, and it lasts longer than ambien, and it is approved for longterm use.
Super low dose doxepin or elavil could be good. They are tricyclic antidepressants. They have harsh side effects. But, when taken in ultra low doses they have sleep promoting effects, improve sleep architecture, and have minimal side effects. By ultra low dose, I mean taking a 10mg tab and breaking it up into just 1mg to 5mg pieces. Some doctors use these ultra low doses to calm the brain as well, instead of using benzos like klonopin.
I've used xanax at times for sleep also. It works good. But it does have some carryover into the next day of feeling a little bit dumb.
