I'm loathe to start the whole drug thing all over again especially with some of the horrible affect I get and am seriously thinking of just going for ECT. The thing is my work sort of keeps me going and helps me (at least it gives me some sense of purpose) but I'm loathe to have it and then find I can no longer work at all.

Hi Denise.

If you receive unilateral treatments, a procedure that involves the stimulation of only one side of the brain, you should be relatively unaffected cognitively so that you can continue to work. With bilateral treatments, people often experience cognitive side effects that include memory difficulties (usually transient) and disorientation. A more recent trend is to use bifrontal placement (more towards the front of the head rather than on the sides). It has been suggested that this procedure offers the efficacy of bilateral while producing milder side-effects that are more like those of unilateral.

What type of procedure are you having?

- unilateral temporal left (low or high dose)
- unilateral temporal right (low or high dose)
- bilateral temporal
- bifrontal
