Matt,
I recently switched from Adderall XR 50 mgs (30 in a.m., 20 at noon) to Dexedrine Spansules 60 mgs. (30 in a.m., 30 at noon) and I'm having a hard time figuring out the duration period.
I took the Adderall for about 3 years, starting out at 10 and finally reaching 50 mgs in the last year. I found the Adderall much more energizing, physically, but was starting to worry a bit about the cardio effects, so I asked to switch to Dex. For some reason my doc let me go from 40 mgs. to 60 when I complained of it not being as effective as Adderall. I think the Dex does work in that I feel motivated and clear headed, but I don't have the physical energy that I did on Adderall.
I think the Dex is just cleaner (or I just believe what I read/hear) and therefore less harmful to take for a long period of time at a pretty high dose. I also added desipramine at the same time (50 mgs.) and take 1.5 mgs of klonopin at night and sometimes .5 during the day. I'm not sure if the desipramine is causing more anxiety or not, or if I'd be better off with plain old prozac, which worked great for me the first time I took it.
Anyway, not sure if I answered your question, but the Dex probably lasts about 5 -6 hours, but I find taking the second dose 3 hours after the first potentiates it and doesn't keep me awake, which can happen if I take it too late in the afternoon.
Oh yeah, the dex probably isn't as pro-social for me as the Adderall was, but it's still definitely better than nothing. I haven't really felt good for the past month or so (had the flu, etc.) so I'm not sure what I can attribute to the change in meds and what is just normal.
