Schizophrenics often have delusions of reference--they think George W. Bush on the radio is talking to them in particular, or something like that. I believe the "loved from afar" delusion is similar. The person who "loves" the patient is often a famous person from a different part of the world. Some famous people have stalkers with this particular type of delusion.
I would say that a vague idea that "someone from New York loves me" is not an example of this type of delusion. And neither is something that is actually loosely based in reality. This is just my thoughts on this matter--when you talk about schizophrenic delusions there are really no "hard and fast" rules--everything is relative and subjective.
