CHEMIST-difference between hydrocodone/oxycodone?

Posted by jerrympls on January 13, 2005, at 23:58:21

Hi Chemist! Glad to see you back on the forum! Was wondering if you could help me out with some info?

My doc has agreed to put me a trial of an opiate for my depression. Even though I know that hydrocodone has worked the best for me, we decided to go with Ocycontin 10mg because it's once daily and close to hydrocodone.

Long story short - I can tell it's helping - but not as well as hydrocodone does. I was wondering how close chemically the two were and if they have the same metabolites? I know that hydrocodone metabolizes into hydromorphone. Maybe hydrocodone hits the mu receptor harder???

Also, do you know of a long-acting hydrocodone preparation in the US? There's something called Hycodan - but I think it contains an atropine-like substance for some reason?

Anyway, any and all info on the similarities and differences between hydrocodone and oxycodone would be MUCH MUCH appreciated!! thanks!
