I have tried tryptophan and found it awful but my experiments with tryosine, phenylalanine and magnesium have yielded more positive results.This page lists some of the major neurotransmitters and associated supplements (although the table at the bottom doesn't list tyrosine as a supplement for NA):

Besides the obvious benefits of being natural, supplements seems to give you hints as to where your biochemistry might be failing without having to endure using the trial and error prescription drug pathway.
