20mg is a fairly high dose for someone who does not take amphetamines regularly. The usual starting dose would be 5mg twice daily (one dose first thing in the morning, one dose 4-6 hrs later). That dose would then be adjusted (usually upward) at weekly intervals until you find the optimal level. Ramping up the dose faster can be very hard on your brain.

The half-life of amphetamine in the bloodstream is about 12 hrs, so even after 24 hrs, a quarter of the dose would still be present. That would probably explain why you were still wired the next day.

With regular use, the duration of action gets shorter, more like 4-6 hours. The amphetamine stays in your bloodstream longer than that, but for some reason you don't really feel it.
