I think it would be good if the doctor were more willing to prescribe a sleep aid, if for no other reason than to counteract the insomnia that is likely from the drug he has already prescribed for you (the Effexor). Is this a GP or a pdoc?--My experience is that psychiatrists generally seem much more willing to prescribe sleep aids than do GPs. If the doctor won't prescribe a benzo-type drug like Ambien (Restoril would probably work even better for you), at least see about trazodone, which is a fairly innocuous sedating AD. As mentioned, Benadryl (diphenhydramine hydrochloride) is easily available OTC; the other one I'm aware of is the stuff in the Unisom tablets, which is doxylamine succinate. There is another Unisom product in gelcaps or something that has the diphenhydramine instead, but at 50 mg/pill instead of the usual 25 mg. You could also try the herbal stuff, but I'm afraid I have no experience with it.
