I am extremely susceptible to sedation (a lot of drugs knock me out). Is there a way to counteract this effect? Does it go away in time? There doesn't seem to be much point in taking it if it makes me less functional.

You will get use to it. Are you just using it for sleep? If so, it would be best to take a sedating AD. They cause sleep in the same way as the AP's(H1 & 5-HT2A blockade) but without unnecessarily tampering with Dopamine blockade.
