I'm sorry to be an alarmist, but in instances of emergency surgery for someone whose taking an MAOI, that anaesthetist has to be absolutely sure he/she knows what an MAOI is, how it affects blood pressure, the contraindications, etc. etc. There's simply no room for guesswork. The anaesthetist has to know for sure what compounds are safe, and to closely monitor blood pressure throughout the procedure.
