Celexa + Lamictal: good combo?

Posted by AMD on January 31, 2004, at 14:32:40

I'm on 40 mg daily of Celexa, and slowly tritating up to 150 mg of Lamictal (now at my beginning my second week of 50 mg).

When I jumped from 25 mg to 50 mg of Lamictal, I noticed a bit of a spacey feeling -- concentrating became more difficult, and my thoughts began to race. On 25 mg, I'd had a rather productive, clear-thinking week. Now I feel less cognitive and less able to put together bits of information into a big picture. I also find myself using the wrong words. (e.g., I initially typed 'like' instead of 'less' in the sentence above). And my head is drifting -- as I went to brush my teeth this morning, I reached for a bottle of vitamins, not the toothpaste... all of this is rather unsettling. On top of this, I have felt a light depression since Wednesday.

Question is: what might be causing this? The lamotrigine? The celexa + lamotrigine combo? Are these two dangerous together (e.g., seratonin syndrome possible)? The depression? If the problem is rooted in the medication, will these SE's fade over time?

I swear -- what a roller coaster ride this has been. Celexa always worked well ... and I'm tempted to just drop everything and rely on the old standby, or perhaps simply another SSRI (Prozac?).

Btw, I'm bipolar II, with what appears to be rapid cycling (!).

Thanks for your input.
