The stimulants Ritalin and Adderall (another option I would suggest looking at) are almost entirely dopaminergic.>My guess is that he will suggest Effexor before he gives you a stimulant like ritalin.
Yes, it might be a good option to first try another drug in the SSRI/SNRI class. But keep in mind, unlike the stimulants, Effexor is not very dopaminergic but rather noradrenergic.
>Having said that, stimulants have been used with success as monotherapy for depression.
Yes, definitely, for some cases of treatment resistant depression, only stimulants (like Ritalin/Adderall/certain MAOI's like Parnate) seem to work wonders. More to the point though, if sexual side-affects are the only reason you don't like Zoloft you might want to discuss with your psycdoc the following other two options:
1. add a very low dose of Ritalin to your current regimen, keeping the Zoloft. Sometimes a very tiny dose can go a very long way.
2. consider Wellbutrin: see article at http://www.biopsychiatry.com/bupropion.htm
And if you'd like to see more research in the area try http://www.biopsychiatry.com/dopaminesex.htm
Good luck + I hope I was helpful.KM
