it makes sense to try a TCA if you've never tried one before. There's a lot more rationale to trying a new class of drug than mechanically exhausting all the possibilities in a given class.
That being said, i think nortriptyline is a powerful antidepressant. it has worked for me for well over a year now. I have a complex kind of depression- I feel 'deactivated' and my sleep becomes terribly disturbed, appetite disappears, and anxiety takes over. It's kept most of these symptoms in check. I also take Strattera and buspirone, for the ADHD and anxiety. I have had lifelong depression and I would call it 'severe.' If there's anything specific you would like to know about nortriptyline I would be happy to answer.
